International cultural immersion trips

WHY TAKE AN IMMERSION TRIP

"We wander for distraction, but we travel for fulfilment."  Hilaire Belloc

Where China Comes Alive Through Friendship and Learning

What is an 'immersion trip?'

Our China immersion trips are carefully designed journeys that go far beyond tourism. Students and teachers live, learn, and connect in China — forming genuine friendships with Chinese peers, gaining real-world perspective on Chinese culture, and developing the global mindset that defines tomorrow’s leaders.

Each trip features school visits filled with meaningful immersive activities that broaden perspectives, celebrate China’s rich cultural heritage, challenge preconceived notions and build international friendships. Through genuine, personal interactions with Chinese students and teachers, travelers gain a deep and authentic understanding of Chinese culture and daily life.

Past trips & experiences

Back in 2012, we took our first group of 8 American High School students for a 3-week summer environmental science research project in Wuxi, China.   Students conducted high-level research at the Freshwater Fishery Research Center in Wuxi, China.  These talented high school students completed their research and even had their findings published in a prominent research publication!

Additional successful trips in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2018, & 2019, 2025 and 2026 all involved student, teacher, and administrator groups traveling throughout China for educational & cultural immersion experiences.

Two 30-person groups from 2 private US schools visited China in the spring of 2025.  These immersion trips include more than just sightseeing experiences.  Students interact and engage with local Chinese students and participate in many cultural, educational, and fun activities together.

All of these inbound and outward bound student/teacher experiences provide rich cultural travel experiences that expand our geographical and cultural understanding of the greater world around us.  Nothing brings greater worldview perspective and understanding than interntational travel.

FAQs

How often do these trips occur?  We try to arrange 1 or 2 trips per year.

What countries have been destination sites?    Our programs have taken students to several incredible destinations, including China (multiple times), Costa Rica, and Kenya. We are always exploring new opportunities for future travel.

China remains our flagship destination—offering unmatched cultural depth and supported by our most trusted and experienced in-country partners. Steve has traveled to China more than 30 times and has many deep connections there.

How much do these trips cost?   Each trip is uniquely priced based on factors such as destination, itinerary, length of travel, and accommodations. We strive to provide exceptional value while delivering a rich, immersive experience.

How old does my child have to be to travel?   Our programs are best suited for students ages 11–17. Select trips are designed to include parents, and in those cases, younger children may participate. Not all trips include a parent option, so we encourage families to review each trip’s details carefully.

Who chaperones these trips?   Advantage-USA provides experienced leadership on every trip. Steve Haines typically serves as the trip leader, bringing decades of experience working with students and leading programs.
Erin Gulinello, also an educator and experienced global traveler, is also a key member of our  immersion travel team.

In addition, participating schools will send one or more teacher chaperones to support and connect with their students throughout the journey.

How do we prepare for the trips?   Preparation is an essential part of the experience. Before departure, families participate in a series of online and/or in-person sessions designed to equip both students and parents for the journey ahead.

From travel logistics to cultural expectations, we guide you every step of the way—so travelers can focus on fully engaging in the experience.
