Having traveled to China more than 30 times, Steve Haines brings a deep respect for Chinese culture alongside a passion for helping international students achieve their academic goals. His experience bridges two worlds—providing families with trusted, informed guidance as they navigate U.S. educational opportunities.

At Advantage-USA, every consulting relationship begins with a simple belief: the student—not the school—is the focus.

Each student is a unique individual with social, emotional, spiritual, and academic needs. Our role is to understand those needs and identify a “right-fit” school where the student will truly thrive—not just gain admission.

Through thoughtful conversations and in-depth interviews, we get to know each student’s strengths, personality, and aspirations. From there, we carefully match them with schools where they can grow in confidence, character, and capability. We do not pursue prestige for its own sake—we prioritize environments where students will flourish and succeed.

Unlike many agencies, Advantage-USA is led by an educator—not a salesperson.

Placing the right student in the wrong environment can lead to unnecessary challenges. Our responsibility is to provide thoughtful, experience-based guidance rooted in a deep understanding of both the student and each prospective school.

If you are just beginning your search, we invite you to start with a complimentary introductory consultation.

This initial conversation allows both the family and consultant to establish trust, clarify expectations, and determine whether the partnership is the right fit—an essential foundation for a successful experience.

We believe in a clear and transparent fee structure.

Our comprehensive consulting fee for a single student is $5,500 USD, structured as follows:

• $1,000 due upon signing the client agreement 
• Remaining balance due upon submission of the first school application 

There are no hidden fees or complicated packages—just straightforward, professional service.

Every step of the school search and application journey is personally guided by Advantage-USA:

Discovery: We begin by understanding the student’s academic background, personality, and goals—while also aligning with the family’s expectations.

Research: Based on this insight, we develop a curated list of 5–8 potential “right-fit” schools.

Discussion: Together, we evaluate each option, considering strengths, challenges, and unique characteristics.

Selection: The list is refined to 3–5 schools for final application.

Throughout the process, we manage timelines, coordinate applications, and communicate with schools—allowing families to focus on supporting their student.

We understand that many international families are unable to visit U.S. campuses in person.

When needed, Advantage-USA can conduct campus visits on your behalf, providing detailed reports that include photos, observations, and insights gathered from on-site interactions—helping families make informed decisions with confidence.

Transitioning to a U.S. school is a significant life change.

Adjusting to a new culture, academic system, and social environment can be both exciting and challenging. Our ongoing relationship with families ensures they are supported throughout this transition.

We remain accessible to provide guidance, answer questions, and offer encouragement—helping students adjust smoothly and confidently.

Students attending day schools typically live with an American host family. Advantage-USA has extensive experience identifying compassionate, well-vetted families who provide a supportive home environment.

While some schools rely on third-party placement agencies, Advantage-USA offers its own International Student Guardian Service (ISGS), which includes:

• Careful screening and selection of host families 
• Cultural and relational training 
• 24/7 availability for students and host families 
• Ongoing evaluation, guidance, and support 

ISGS services are separate from consulting fees and vary based on geographic location and cost of living.

On average, families can expect an annual cost of $15,000–$25,000 USD (in addition to tuition and school fees). Host family stipends are included within this range.

While this represents an additional investment, it is typically $15,000–$25,000 less than the cost of most U.S. boarding schools, which often range from $55,000–$65,000 per year.

In many cases, a day school experience combined with a strong host family not only provides financial savings, but also offers a deeper and more authentic immersion into American culture.
